Greetings Alumni,
Since our last correspondence, I’ve been beating the heat by immersing myself in the art on view in NYC’s air-conditioned cultural institutions. Fashion has been top of mind, not just because I’ve run out of breezy outfit ideas. First, I was drawn to Rudi Gernreich’s Monokini design featured in the Jewish Museum’s terrific show, New York: 1962-1964. Then, a few weekends ago, I (finally) visited the Met’s newest installation of In America: An Anthology of Fashion and thoroughly enjoyed the visual delights of the American period rooms enlivened by music and mannequins. Next on my list is the Brooklyn Museum’s presentation of Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech,” a showcase for Abloh’s creative process and his collaborations across art, design, and commerce (note: students get 15% off weekday tickets by using the discount code XPROMOGUEST at checkout!). I know these exhibitions will feed me through the fall—which, to me anyway, can’t arrive fast enough.

Annabel Keenan (MA ‘15) has organized and will moderate a panel on sustainability in the arts at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles on August 25th. The panel explores how four artists engage with environmental and social issues to work towards a sustainable art industry. Her event’s details are listed below in the “Events in the World” section of the newsletter. Well done, Annabel!

Select Career Opportunities
The Baltimore Museum of Art has an opening for a Curatorial Assistant for the Department of American Painting & Sculpture and Decorative Arts.
The American Folk Art Museum has three open positions, including a Luce Assistant Curator, a Collections & Exhibitions Associate, and a Director of Collections.
Yeshiva University seeks a Curator to plan and coordinate the exhibition and installation of the Belz Collection focusing on Jewish art in the Belz Building of the uptown YU Wilf campus.
Baylor University is hiring a Lecturer in Museum Studies to start in January 2023.
Dr. Lindsay Macnaughton of University of Buckingham and Laura C. Jenkins of The Courtauld Institute of Art invite abstracts for their conference, “Boiseries: Decoration and Migration from the Eighteenth Century to the Present,” which will take place at Camden Place in 2023. Application materials are due by September 2.
Bayou Bend is accepting proposals for papers on the relationship between imagery and identity in material culture and visual art in pre-1900 Texas, the Lower South, and the Southwest, to be presented at the 2023 David B. Warren Symposium. Application materials are due by September 15.
Dr. Francesca Borgo, who leads the Lise Meitner Research Group on Decay, Loss, and Conservation in Art History at the Bibliotheca Hertziana, and Ruth Ezra, Lecturer in Art History at the University of St. Andrews have issued a call for papers for a 2023 conference to take place in Rome on “Wastework.” Application materials are due by September 15.
The Decorative Arts Trust is offering IDEAL Internships for 2023 and 2024 to create important professional opportunities for under-represented communities, specifically by establishing openings for students of color seeking museum careers. To apply for an IDEAL Internship Initiative Grant, please submit a proposal by September 9 to thetrust@decorativeartstrust.org.
Each year at their Annual Meeting, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM) awards between six and ten fellowships for individuals to attend the conference through their Bruce Craig Fellowship and their Fellowship for Diversity. Their goal is to limit financial barriers to fellowship applicants so they can focus on professional development and networking. Application materials are due by August 19 at 5 pm ET.
The Center for Craft 2023 Craft Research Fund applications are now open! Applications for their Artist Fellowship, Exhibition Grant, and Project Grant are all due by October 21. A free, virtual information session will be held on September 6 from 3–4 pm ET for the Artist Fellowship and September 8 from 3–4 pm ET for the Exhibition and Project Grants.

Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra
Thursday, August 18, and Friday, August 19

In solidarity with the victims of the war in Ukraine, the Metropolitan Opera and the Polish National Opera have gathered leading Ukrainian musicians into the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra for a European and American tour, culminating with outdoor concerts at Lincoln Center. Under the leadership of Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, the orchestra will perform a program that includes Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov’s Seventh Symphony and Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Ukrainian virtuoso Anna Fedorova. Leading Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska will perform the great aria “Abscheulicher!” from Beethoven’s Fidelio, a paean to humanity and peace in the face of violence and cruelty.
Unfolding Forms: Artist Conversations

Join the Center for Book Arts at Miriam Gallery for a round table discussion with Unfolding Forms: Multiple Approaches to the Book featured artists NIC Kay, Rachel Hillery, and Lizania Cruz. Discussions will explore what initially drew the artists to the book form, their processes in bookmaking, their experience as Center for Book Arts artist-in-residences and much more.
Marilyn Pappas in Conversation with Glenn Adamson

Tune in for an in-depth conversation between renowned fiber artist Marilyn Pappas and curator, writer, and historian Glenn Adamson. The two will discuss the evolution of Pappas’s remarkable career, her role in the studio craft movement of the 1960s, and her current retrospective exhibition at the Fuller Craft Museum.
Joyous Banquet of Guo Ziyi–Ceremony and Ritual in Joseon Court Painting

Join painting specialist Yoonjung Seo for a discussion of the Joyous Banquet of Guo Ziyi, a folding screen from the Art Institute’s collection currently on view in Among Friends and Family. Using this work as a jumping-off point, Yoonjung Seo examines the stylistic features, iconography, pictorial sources, symbolic meanings, and ritual contexts of this subject in the late Joseon period (1392–1910) in Korea. She discusses the process of cultural transmission and adaptation that occurred in East Asian countries and the ceremonial significance of large-scale folding screens in Joseon court art. Through comparisons of various versions of Banquet of Guo Ziyi, she presents insights into Joseon court painting style and its broader cultural influence.
Approaches to Sustainability: A Conversation with Artists Engaging with Environmental Issues

As creative thinkers, artists are uniquely positioned to establish a framework for sustainable practices and reflection on the broader systems around us. This panel explores the work of various artists engaging with issues of sustainability through environmental and social justice, community activism, and climate-related content, representing a wide variety of approaches to the broad notion of “sustainability.” The breadth and diversity of their work can help us better understand the nuances of sustainability. The panel is organized by Annabel Keenan, who reports on contemporary art and sustainability for various publications, including The Art Newspaper. Keenan will moderate the conversation to shed light on these four artists’ approaches to sustainability.
