Greetings Alumni,
I hope this newsletter finds you experiencing a moment of peace as 2021 hurtles to a close! One of my own end-of-year rituals is visiting the Chicago Botanic Garden lights because nothing says “holidays” quite like shivering with your family members under the blaze of spectacular light displays. In the spirit of this tradition, I have added a couple of New York options to the events list.

Alumni Spotlight
Rebecca Klassen (MA ’11) and Laura Mogulescu (MA ’22) curated Art for Change: The Artist & Homeless Collaborative at the New-York Historical Society, which will be on view between December 3, 2021–April 3, 2022.
Dare Turner (MA ‘11) was interviewed by Michael Dewberry (MA ’17) for Artroverted about her role as assistant curator of Indigenous Art of the Americas at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
On December 13, Christina De León (MPhil ’20, PhD candidate) and Jorge Rivas (MPhil ’12, PhD ’18) participated in a virtual dialogue for the Decorative Arts Trust, during which they discussed the decorative arts as well as collecting histories at their respective institutions, Cooper Hewitt and the Denver Art Museum.
Erica Lome (MA ’15) will be joining Historic New England as their new associate curator in March 2022. In Summer 2021, Erica co-curated the exhibition American by Craft: The Furniture of Olof Althin for the American Swedish Historical Museum. She was also the recipient of the 2020–22 Curatorial Internship Grant funded by the Decorative Arts Trust. She became the Peggy N. Gerry curatorial associate at the Concord Museum as part of a two-year project to redesign, reinterpret, and reinstall 12 new permanent galleries.

Select Career Opportunities
The Department of Art History at VCUarts Qatar (Virginia Commonwealth University’s branch campus in Doha) is searching for an art historian specializing in the Early Modern period (c.1400–1800) at the assistant professor rank. Preference will be given to scholars whose research and teaching interests focus on colonial societies in a transnational or transoceanic context. Candidates concentrating on Africa or the Americas are especially welcome to apply. While the review of applications begins on January 5, the position is open until filled.
The New York School of Interior Design is in need of instructors to teach their Historical Styles I & II survey courses. The Historic New Orleans Collection is currently recruiting for Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) summer fellowships. These fellowships are an opportunity for graduate students or emerging professionals to assist with field work documenting historic objects in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
The Fruitlands Museum is seeking a Curatorial Fellow as well as a Project Archivist.
The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum invites applications for a Registration Fellowship.
The Ecole du Louvre has organized a call for applicants for the “Fondation Marc de Montalembert.“ The prize is a 9 000€ scholarship, a 1 month-research stay in Paris and the possibility to publish an article. The History Graduate Student Association of Loyola University in Chicago invites paper proposals for the 18th HGSA conference, “Persevering Through Time: Little Known Histories and Untold Stories,” to be held February 19–20, 2022. Proposals are due by December 31, 2021.
The National Association for Museum Exhibition has issued a Call for Proposals for their Fall 2022 Issue of Exhibition, entitled “Effective Exhibitions Should [Fill in the Blank].” Proposals are due by January 4, 2022.
Southern Methodist University invites proposals for their Art History Graduate Conference, entitled “In Excess,” from April 1–2, 2022. Proposals are due by January 18, 2022.

The Museum of Art & Design Presents Homosilica: Glass is Gay
Thursday, December 16

An interdisciplinary artist, Grace Whiteside will present their latest project, Homosilica, an experimental theatre piece investigating the fluidity of glass through the lens of queer identity. Using footage of a hot-glass performance that references the popular TV series How It’s Made alongside an on-stage narration in the style of BBC broadcaster David Attenborough, Homosilica will showcase the nonbinary properties of glass and its capacity to represent the gender spectrum. In this coming-out story, pseudo-science, naturalistic documentary, and hot glass become tools for satire and absurdity, taking the audience on a journey of self-questioning and humorous discovery.
Amy Lamb’s Photography: The Interplay of Science and Art

In this virtual talk, artist Amy Lamb talks about her artistic process and the roots of her practice in her early scientific training.
Harlem Heritage Holiday Walk

Walk the historic streets and learn the history, visiting sights associated with civil rights, music, art, food, religion, architecture, and more. Tour guide will be equipped with portable video and music, playing classic Christmas songs along the way we will be caroling through the heritage, while learning the history of iconic individuals and events who have made the community the Black capital of the world.
