Bard Graduate Center News
On February 29, Bard Graduate Center Gallery opened its spring exhibition, Eileen Gray. It is the first in-depth exhibition in the U.S. to examine the total oeuvre of designer and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976).
The 24th Annual Iris Foundation Awards luncheon will bring together the design and academic communities to honor outstanding individuals who have contributed to the study and appreciation of the decorative arts, design history, and material culture. This year’s event will be held on April 1 at the Colony Club.
Last semester, professors Catherine Whalen and Aaron Glass taught a seminar entitled Picturing Things: Photography as Material Culture; we spotlight their trip to the Penumbra Foundation. We also interview two Teen Curators participating in a program developed by BGC and the Hill Art Foundation. Read on for more Bard Graduate Center news.

Eileen Gray on view through July 12
|
|
Eileen Gray (1878–1976), an Irish architect-designer who worked primarily in France, was a pioneer in modern design and architecture and one of the few women to practice professionally in those fields before World War II.
This exhibition is the first in the United States to examine the total oeuvre of Eileen Gray. In addition to affirming her accomplishments as an architect and a designer, it sheds light on the full sweep of Gray’s career, including her work as a painter and photographer. The exhibition is largely based on new research, including plans, drawings, sketchbooks, photographs, and letters, that reveal how Gray designed her most famous house, E 1027, and other architectural projects. The exhibition features never-before-seen furniture and lacquer works, as well as paintings, photography, rugs, and archival materials from her best-known projects.
