December at Bard Graduate Center

Agents of Faith: Votive Objects in Time and Place is on view through January 6. This fascinating exhibition looks at the things humans choose to offer in their votive transactions. Featured works include votive objects from the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, a rare ancient anatomical votive from the Louvre (this month’s “Object of the Month” below), artworks from across the Metropolitan Museum of Art, votive paintings made by Mexican migrant workers intent on immigrating to the United States, and objects left at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. In this newsletter, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting submissions for the 2018 Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Book Prize and that the catalogue accompanying the fall 2017 exhibition, John Lockwood Kipling: Arts and Crafts in the Punjab and London, is on the short list for the 2018 William MB Berger Prize for British Art History.

Shortlisted for MB Berger Prize

This thoroughly researched and lavishly illustrated book, edited by Julius Bryant and Susan Weber, which accompanied the fall 2017 Gallery exhibition, has been shortlisted for the 2018 William MB Berger Prize for British Art History. Available in the Gallery and the online store.

Objects of Care & Resistance from the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands
December 7, 6:30 pm.

An estimated ten thousand people have died attempting to cross the US–Mexico border. Thousands more have disappeared. Artists, humanitarians, and human rights activists from the borderlands will discuss how care, faith, or politics is transmitted through material objects. Learn more.

Acts of Faith: Film Series
December 14, 6:30 pm

Acts of Faith features films that depict a wide variety of religious rituals across cultures, from individual acts of devotion to community-wide sacred practices. Selections include ethnographic documentaries, fictional narratives, and experiments in cinematic form. Guest curated by Ed Halter, Critic in Residence at Bard College, and founder and co-director of Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic arts in Brooklyn. The series concludes on December 14 with The Secret Nation .
