Research programming is a major component of intellectual life at Bard Graduate Center. Organized by our faculty, the seminars, lectures, and symposia scheduled throughout the semester broaden our curricular vision and help further the institution’s goal of promoting research in the areas of decorative arts, design history, and material culture—what we call the “cultural history of the material world.” Advance registration is strongly encouraged. MacArthur x BGC: What is Research?

Research may well be the key word in our contemporary knowledge culture, with global investment in research across all industries estimated at $1 trillion, and its importance acknowledged by governments, industry, and academia around the world. Yet, the idea of research, the practice of research, and the social life of research is not a subject of reflection. To begin the task of understanding research, Bard Graduate Center has gathered a group of artists, scientists, and humanists—all MacArthur “Genius” Award winners—for three evenings of discussion moderated by Dean Peter Miller, himself a MacArthur Fellow. These conversations launch a project on research that will culminate in an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery in fall 2023. Read more.

Tuesday, November 26, 12–2 pm

This workshop is devoted to Martin Heidegger’s thinking about history in the 1920s and specifically his 1926 summer seminar on Johann Gustav Droysen’s textbook on historical methodology (Grundriss der Historik). That 1926 seminar, which was his most direct engagement with academic history and its practice, has neither been published, translated, or commented upon. In the seminar were Paul Oskar Kristeller, later doyen of Renaissance studies in the United States, Karl Löwith, polymathic commentator on philosophy and history in the nineteenth century, and Hans-Georg Gadamer, philosopher and theorist of hermeneutics. This exhibition represents an unprecedented examination of the dynamic relationship between fashion, war, and gender politics in France during World War I.
