Hello Prospective Students!

Many of you have received my emails or seen me at our first open house but to those who haven’t, my name is Karlyn Allenbrand and I’m the student Admissions Ambassador here at BGC. As you’re probably aware, our campus is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, close to many of New York’s incredible museums, libraries, and galleries. This was a key factor in my decision to move to New York from Texas, and I’d like to share some of my favorite spots in the city!

One of my favorite aspects of attending graduate school in New York City is the proximity to many museums and libraries. As a student, you will receive free and reduced entry into world-class museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New-York Historical Society, and the Museum of Modern Art. Moreover, the proximity to institutions like the Met and MoMA will give you access to their libraries and archives. I love visiting the library at MoMA when I’m looking for obscure books on furniture, graphic design, and architecture. Many professors integrate field trips into course work, as well. I’ve toured special exhibitions with curators and explored some collections not available to the public. Last week, we visited the United Nations for a class, and we learned about the architecture and interiors that were designed specifically for the complex.

Because of our location, students have lots of opportunities for wonderful internships at museums, historic houses, galleries, publishing houses, and other arts organizations in the area. This summer I interned in the archives at R & Company in Tribeca, processing the estate of émigré industrial designer Greta Magnusson Grossman. My qualifying paper (our final project for the MA) has developed from materials in this archive and I’m grateful to be able to visit regularly as I continue my research.

I want to thank everyone who attended our first open house on Sunday. I look forward to meeting many of you at our next open house on November 19th and virtually on December 3rd. Until then, feel free to email me directly if you have any questions about BGC or living in New York City!

Best wishes,

Karlyn Allenbrand, MA ‘24
