Dear Alumni,

This past weekend I saw Oppenheimer so you don’t have to (that is, unless you want to)! This three hour film didn’t find the time to address the particulars about Los Alamos and the people who lived on or nearby the site of the Manhattan Project before it became a locus for the building of an atomic bomb. If you’re interested in learning more about the civilian perspective, I recommend checking out this podcast episode about Edith Warner’s tea room, which was visited by scientists and Santa Fe residents alike!

Hadley Jensen (MA ‘13, PhD ‘18), curator of Shaped by the Loom: Weaving Worlds in the American Southwest, has recently co-curated another exhibition at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe. Horizons: Weaving Between the Lines with Diné Textiles opened on July 16, 2023 and will be on view through June 2, 2024. Stay tuned for the accompanying publication, supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art (expected spring 2024). Congratulations, Hadley!

Dance Performance: Cripping the Galleries

Cripping the Galleries is a series of live public programs in which local dance artists activate museums through the lenses of crip culture, access, and belonging. For the session in the Art Institute galleries, four original works by self-identified neurodivergent, sick, and disabled dance artists respond to the museum, its collections, and the various histories of disability these spaces invoke. “Crip” as a noun is a pejorative reclaimed by disabled people who embrace it as an outsider identity with an edge. When used as a verb, “to crip” is to expose the oppressive systems normalizing ableism and imagine the alternatives.

LA Print: Edition 12 Featuring Self Help Graphics and Art

LACMA’s Prints and Drawings Council presents Edition 12 of LA Print, a public program that explores current trends in printmaking and print publishing in Los Angeles. Edition 12 celebrates the 50th anniversary of Self Help Graphics & Art, a community art center that fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latinx artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms. This panel discussion will explore this dynamic cultural resource with painter and children’s book author José Lozano, mixed-media artist Shizu Saldamando, Self Help Graphics & Art’s Master Printer Dewey Tafoya, and documentary producer Gloria Westcott.

Join Funk You Too! artist Natalia Arbelaez for an intensive ceramics workshop exploring how fun and play can be inspirations in the studio. Learn traditional ceramic methods like pinch, coil, and slab to make humorous small sculptures or funky functional forms.  All skill levels are welcome. (Funk You Too! Socrates x Noguchi Field Guide: Plant Dyeing

Join Noguchi Educator Harumi Ori and Japanese artist Tomoe Mineta at Socrates Sculpture Park for a workshop experimenting with natural dyes created with plants. Participants will explore plant dyeing on silk fabric. All participants will be given a free pass to visit The Noguchi Museum after the program.
