Hello Alumni,

Margarete Shütte-Lihotzky’s “Frankfurt Kitchen” has been a totem in my mind during my recent move from Harlem to East Harlem. Not only due to a 99% Invisible episode on the designer-architect that aired in June, but also because in settling into my tiny one-bedroom, I’ve been obsessing over the various uses and roles of my cabinets, closets, and storage bins. Readers, I am *this close* to mapping out the choreography of my kitchen-living room space.

Leigh Wishner (MA ‘01) was in conversation with A Dark, A Light, A Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes curators Alexa Griffith Winton (MA ‘03) and Susan Brown at the Cooper Hewitt on July 12. They discussed the extensive and extraordinary contributions Liebes made to midcentury fashion design. Take a closer look at how food, art, and politics are connected. Presented in conjunction with Pressing Politics: Revolutionary Graphics from Mexico and Germany, this class will focus on the history of beer in Mexico and includes a beer-centered art history presentation from Maite Gomez-Rejón of ArtBites and a beer tasting led by Carmen Favela of Mujeres Brew House, as well as L.A.-style hot dogs (both classic bacon-wrapped and vegan) and agua frescas from street vendor and activist Merced Sanchez. Join us for a distinctly Latina twist on summer beer and brats.

In commemoration of New York State’s Abolition Day, join us for a discussion tracing the history of slavery from the Dutch period of New Amsterdam to the present period. We will look at how geography, religion, the black church, African American abolitionists and their desire for independence led to the July 4, 1827 manumission of slavery in New York State. Vlogger @theAncestorsSpeaKs will contextualize this history, relating it to the struggles within the Lower East Side along with the film screening The Sun Rises in the East. The film’s director Tayo Giwa and educator Basir Mchawi will discuss events leading up to the Ocean Hill/Brownsville School Boycott for community control of public education and the aftermath of the boycott.

Join AFAM for an exciting collaboration with Harlem Needle Arts and The Africa Center! Create whimsical quilt portraits of yourself or someone you care about with artist Sylvia Hernandez. Participants will be given colorful fabrics and buttons to work with. This workshop will take place at The Africa Center in Harlem (1280 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY). Participation in this series is FREE but space is limited and registration is required.

The Center for Craft is excited to host the Craft Archive Fellowship Virtual Program, showcasing the recently published research of our inaugural Craft Archive Fellows in Hyperallergic. The program will feature a presentation of archival research that documents histories that have been erased or missing from dominant narratives in craft and recognize neglected legacies of individual craftspeople and the contributions of diverse craft communities. This research is vital for telling more accurate and expanded craft histories that will shape conversations and create new legacies, leading to a more inclusive future for craft.

Founder of Lina Ghotmeh — Architecture, Paris based discipline, Lina Ghotmeh’s designs develop from thorough historical research emerging as exquisite interventions that enliven our memories and senses. In this “Archaeology of the future”, every architecture is drawn from its place and from the traces of its past. A link is drawn between time, memory, space establishing an anchored place drawing a strong tie between the Humane and Nature. The past meets the future as histories are unearthed and memories excavated to enable questioning, innovation, and a more sustainable architecture. Bearing a “humanist” approach, Lina Ghotmeh’s practice emphasizes the power of craft and that of the hand in the making of Architecture. Through this, the built environment embraces the traditions of its localities, while uplifting the subjective experience and the collective memory of those it recalls.
