Yannos Kourayos
Greek Ministry of Culture

Join us for a lecture on the excavations on the island of Despotiko in the Cyclades. Despotiko is of major interest to Mediterranean archaeologists thanks to the discovery in 2001 of an Archaic sanctuary of Apollo. Yannos Kourayos, the director of the excavations, will introduce recent finds and highlight the exciting possibilities they present for understanding cult and everyday life among the ancient islanders of the region. Key to his project’s success is the multi-disciplinary team of archaeologists, architects, conservators and marble technicians who study the site’s rich material culture and aim to restore several of its cult buildings. The lecture will be followed by a discussion that maps out the scope of BGC’s student participation in the project as part of the annual travel program.

Yannos Kourayos is Director of the Despotiko excavations, Head Archaeologist for the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, Greek Ministry of Culture.

Thursday, November 17, 12:15 pm
