Thursday Tours
Threads of Power: Lace from the Textilmuseum St. Gallen
Every Thursday from October 6, 12:30 pm

Join a Thursday Tour and explore the Threads of Power exhibition with a Bard Graduate Center gallery educator. Tours last 30 minutes and you are welcome to stay and explore the exhibition on your own after the tour ends.

A Paul and Irene Hollister Artist Talk on Glass with Fields of the Future Fellow and conceptual artist Charisse Pearlina Weston, followed by a conversation with Queens Museum assistant curator Lindsey Berfond.

Join us for an artist talk with conceptual artist Charisse Pearlina Weston. This evening is co-sponsored by the Queens Museum, where Weston’s artworks, including glass sculpture, photographic prints, and site-specific installation, will be on view from October 2022 through March 2023 in a solo show titled of [a] tomorrow: lighter than air, stronger than whiskey, cheaper than dust. The artist talk will be followed by a conversation with Queens Museum assistant curator Lindsey Berfond. Weston is a researcher-in-residence in the Bard Graduate Center Fields of the Future Fellowship program.

Performer and musicologist Elizabeth Weinfield (Juilliard) and celebrated opera director Elena Araoz (Princeton University) collaborate on an evening of music and performance that takes place throughout the Threads of Power exhibition, with selections that explore the mathematical and aesthetic dimensions of lace through the lens of history, gender, and labor.

Visitors will be led through the gallery, floor by floor, with time to explore between musical interludes. This is a timed experience—visitors will have the opportunity to return to the gallery to explore at their own pace on a future date.

Making Lace: Global Networks
A research symposium on historical and contemporary lacemaking traditions around the world

Presented in conjunction with—and expanding on the European and American focus of—the exhibition Threads of Power: Lace from the Textilmuseum St. Gallen, this symposium brings together lacemakers and lace scholars to foreground historical and contemporary traditions of lacemaking from around the world, with particular emphasis on gender, labor, race, and identity. Talks will consider the variety of cultural landscapes from which lacemaking techniques and traditions emerge, the tools of the craft, and the significance of this labor-intensive textile in fashion.
