Much has happened since my last newsletter and I hope you’ve been taking care of yourself! Of little note: the breezy temperatures in the 60s and 70s have been succeeded by 80 and 90 degree heat waves, an indication that we have officially entered deep summer. I myself have been enjoying NYC’s lush greenery, in particular seeking out environments that promote a sense of my being a body in space (even when I am sweating through my shirt). I hope you too are feeling out your own way to be a body in this new-old landscape.

America the Buttercream: Why We Decorate Our Dessert

Follow the history of pastry and sugar from the late 18th century to today in this public program that will explore the origins of the pastry arts, sugar fancy, and the ties between sugar and architecture. Edward Cabral, multimedia sculptor, chef, and lecturer, will trace the global influences that developed American desserts, and how a decorated sheet cake became a staple at every child’s birthday party. The event will finish with a live demonstration of cake decorating and an overview of cake design and ornamentation before participants eat the cake.

Now in its fifty-second year, the Midsummer Festival of the Arts is a Sheboygan tradition for family outings and for finding special works of art. There will also be live music and performances, hands-on art making, demonstrations, food, and fun…all found on the grounds of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Sheboygan’s City Green.
