These tours will explore object highlights from two exhibitions now on view at Bard Graduate Center Gallery. Conserving Active Matter explores the human effort to conserve things. On view are objects that span five continents and range in time from the Paleolithic to the present. Part exhibition, part artwork, Richard Tuttle: What Is the Object? invites visitors to see, touch and hold 75 items drawn from Tuttle’s own collection.

Objects Speak! A Virtual Verbal Description Tour

Deborah Lutz, an artist, museum educator, and adjunct instruction in studio art, describes details of the form, materiality, and aesthetic nature of objects in Richard Tuttle: What Is The Object? for the enjoyment of visitors with low vision and blindness. Group discussion takes place throughout.

Film Night: Selected Shorts
Saturday, May 28

An evening of short films that explore care and repair in everyday life—materially, socially, ecologically—hosted by Dr. Joshua Bell, curator of globalization at the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History. Short selections include Jáaji Approx (2015), Kapaemahu (2020), and Mobile Goroka (2018).

Conserving Clothing, Preserving Memories
June 1 and June 8
6 pm (In person)

What is your most cherished piece of clothing? What stories does it hold, and how do you care for it? Artist and fashion scholar Kate Sekules leads a few lucky patrons through a process of storytelling and visible mending, giving new life to beloved garments in need of repair. This interactive experience brings the themes of Conserving Active Matter to a human scale through storytelling, demonstration, and dialogue with curator Soon Kai Poh. Ann Coppinger, senior conservator at the Museum at FIT will join the conversation for the June 1 session, and Sarah Scaturro will join on June 8.
