Making History: the Art and Politics of Clay

Independent ceramic artist and scholar, Michelle Erickson, will discuss her practice as a studio potter in the fields of contemporary art, historical archaeology, and studio ceramics. She will explain how her work gives relevance to the legacy of ceramics as a form of social expression, and reference the ways other makers have deployed ceramics to advocate for political change and social justice as well as to document epic events in human experience.

BGC 25th Anniversary Book Party

Clock-Making in Early America: Lunchtime Lecture at Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden

In conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition, “Revolutionary Revolutions: Clocks and Industry in Early America,” this lecture will focus on the widespread success of American-made shelf clocks in the 19th-century and the interrelated forces of technological convenience, comfort, taste, and affordability that drive the consumer habits of a middle class, then and now.

“The Alexander Hamilton Prequel: Day-by-Day With One Founding Father”

Join Barbara Chernow for this evening lecture at the Fraunces Tavern Museum as she discusses the importance of Hamilton to the foundation of America, as well as the critical role historical research techniques play in forming our perceptions of the past. She will highlight how the collection of the complete papers of the Founding Fathers have established a new standard of documentary editing and created a new picture of the day-to-day lives of these leaders.
