Dear Alumni,

Summer is here, at least for those of us on the academic calendar. This semester, I took an English seminar on Samuel Richardson’s very long 1740s novel Clarissa. Having finished the book at last, I’m left with a void to fill—probably with something a bit lighter, and not from the eighteenth century! I welcome any summer book recommendations, and hope that the end of May finds you well-appointed with fun reading material.

You may notice that today’s newsletter is reaching your inbox on a Wednesday rather than a Thursday. I’m writing to you a day early to share the QP Symposium livestream. The symposium will take place tomorrow, May 23, starting at 1 pm. Alumni can watch virtually through the livestream. I look forward to hearing more about the graduating students’ research and encourage you to join online if you can!

Encounters of Text and Material Culture in Ancient Judea
Tuesday–Thursday, June 4–6

Encounters of Text and Material Culture in Ancient Judea is a three-evening, Leon Levy Foundation lecture series that engages with Judean and later Jewish material culture during the first millennium BCE, mostly at the latter third of this millennium during the Hellenistic-Roman period. This is not an archeological study surveying pottery assemblages and architectural plans. Instead, Jonathan Ben-Dov focuses on particular types of material objects that lend themselves to interaction with texts. The surveyed materials are widely variegated: from monumental rock reliefs that straddle the borders of nature and culture to handheld devices for time measurement. Special attention is dedicated to scrolls, which posit the text-and-matter encounter in a particularly poignant way, and where new paths are trodden today, in the digital age.

A personal plug, if I may: From June 6–7, the American Philosophical Society will host a conference titled Making Nature: The Labor of Natural History. The events will take in person in Philadelphia and online. I’m excited to present on the panel “Materiality & Resistance,” along with Hadley Jensen (MA ’13, PhD ’19). The Met Opera will perform Orfeo ed Euridice until June 8, starring Anthony Roth Costanzo, who happens to be a friend of Samuel Snodgrass (MA ’22).
