Playing Well with Others: Dollatry as Collaborative Scholarship
Dollatry: Playing with Likeness, opening in February 2025, takes dolls seriously. By focusing on how dolls don’t simply reflect but actively construct human identities, it explores the social politics of representation in gender, race, and ability through the universal activity of play. In this informal talk, first-time curator Freyja Hartzell will discuss the process of developing Dollatry as a mode of collaborative scholarship: beginning in the classroom with BGC students, moving through exhibition writing and layout design with BGC’s gallery team, and highlighting ongoing collaborations with artists currently preparing commissions for the show.
