Nathan W. Stroupe
World Monuments Fund

In this talk, Nathan Stroupe (Senior Director of Field Projects) offers a behind-the-scenes view of World Monuments Fund (WMF) program, the Watch. Since 1996, WMF has issued a call to action for nearly 900 sites through the World Monuments Watch, working with communities around the world to make a difference through projects ranging from raising awareness and physical conservation to preservation training programs. Stroupe will share how they develop projects in a comprehensive and holistic way, and the cross-cutting and sustained impact WMF has had across a variety of sites over the last 60 years.

Nathan W. Stroupe joined World Monuments Fund as the Senior Director of Field Projects in 2024 and is now Vice President of Field Projects, currently overseeing 51 projects across 34 countries. Prior to joining WMF, he worked in Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East overseeing cultural heritage and development programs for the United Nations-Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Turquoise Mountain, an NGO focused on the protection of cultural heritage. During his time in Afghanistan, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Tajikistan, and Saudi Arabia, he managed programs in built heritage, urban development, artisan education, and livelihood support for partners, including the International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas (ALIPH), the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations, and the World Bank. Stroupe has degrees in archaeology, Middle Eastern history, and Islamic studies from UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and the University of Tehran.
