Laurie Dahlberg
Montgomery Place at Bard College

Of Millstones and Milestones: Montgomery Place at Bard College
Since Bard College acquired the Montgomery Place historic site in 2016, Dahlberg and her colleagues have been working to make the site a multifaceted resource that serves the college’s educational mission. With over 8000 collection items, 380 acres, five cottages, and a historic coach house and mansion, it’s easier said than done. As they attempt to launch an undergraduate concentration in material culture studies, maintain the buildings in a time of diminishing grant opportunities, create public-facing programs, and open the collections to scholars—all while maintaining relevance to the thoughts and needs of the contemporary audience—they have to be creative. Dahlberg will be joined by Heather Topcik (Dean and Director of Libraries, Bard College) and Amy Herman (Collections Manager and Registrar, Montgomery Place).

Laurie Dahlberg is a historian of photography and 19th century art. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Princeton University and works primarily on early photography in France and Great Britain. She has taught in the Art HIstory and Visual Culture Program at Bard College since 1996. In 2024 she was appointed Faculty Director of the Montgomery Place campus of Bard College.
