Delhi University
BGC Fellow
In the Hindu jati system—popularly known as the caste system—skills are seen as embodied and ‘inherited’. In this worldview, embodied skills impart power over certain materials, and handling of materials is partly constitutive of the body itself. Subhadra Channa’s new research project seeks to open up this discourse to include larger ethnographic and museum-stored materials, and to consider how the boundaries of social groups are shaped by occupation, embodiment, and materiality.
