Gallé and Dreyfus: A Republican Vision (A Reconsideration)
In 1900, French glassmaker Émile Gallé created a dramatic installation for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Glass Furnace—and its centerpiece, The Dark Men—thematized the quest for truth and justice in the context of the Dreyfus Affair. In this Tuesday Tea, Jessica M. Dandona will share her interpretation of these works, and what a deeper reflection on their materiality might bring to our understanding of their significance. At heart, she will argue, Gallé’s work raises a perplexing question: can works of decorative art be political?
