Aisling O’Carroll
ETH Zürich
An interior, a counter history
Reconstructing the Grande Salle of La Vedette
In this talk, Aisling O’Carroll will share the research investigation and design methods employed in her reconstruction of the nineteenth-century interior of French architect Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc’s studio from his home in Lausanne, Switzerland. This immersive, digital reconstruction—featured in the BGC gallery Atelier—combines digital technologies with hand drawing and original works from the architect’s archive. O’Carroll navigates the gaps within archival collections to explore how architectural design analysis can reveal new perspectives and expand authorship through investigation and speculation.
Aisling O’Carroll is a licensed landscape architect, trained in both architecture and landscape architecture. Her work integrates design research with history and theory methods to address social, ecological, and environmental issues. Aisling is currently Assistant Professor at ETH Zürich, where she leads the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Geohistorical Practice. She is co-founder and co-editor in chief of The Site Magazine.
