Ex Voto NYC is a series of off site programs designed to activate votive sites in each of the five boroughs. A celebration of New York’s rich history and culture, this series kicks off with a walking tour of Sacred Spaces in the Lower East East Side on October 7.

During this tour, participants will explore St. Marks-in-the-Bowery where Peter Stuyvesant is buried, hear the German history in the Church of The Most Holy Redeemer, walk into Tompkins Square Park to visit the venerable Hare Krishna Elm Tree under which the spiritual movement from India was started in 1966 and more.

The second program in our Ex Voto NYC series, Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Catholic Life in New York, is on October 13.

Join us for a conversation between Joseph Sciorra, director of Academic and Cultural Programs at Queens College’s John D. Calandra Italian American Institute; Michael DeCataldo, an active member of the Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel; and Diane Venosa, Staten Island resident and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel volunteer. A musical performance by Michela Musolino, a Sicilian-American internationally acclaimed folk singer specializing in traditional and contemporary Sicilian Roots music will follow.

The third program in our Ex Voto NYC series, Border Crossings: This and Other Worlds, takes place from November 2–4.

Taking inspiration from celebrations likes Dia de Los Muertos, The Ghost Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, Bon Festival, and All Saints Day, Border Crossings considers the myriad of ways in which we honor those who are no longer with us.
