The centerpiece of nearly every Thanksgiving meal is the perfectly cooked golden-roasted turkey. As a case in point, check out this beauty warming over a blue Frigidaire stove from the 1960s, a great example of mid-twentieth-century material culture featured in The Mid-Century Kitchen: America’s Favorite Room, from Workspace to Dreamscape, 1940s-1970s, a new book by Sarah Archer (BGC MA ’06).

The images in Sarah’s book bring back memories of holidays past for many of us. They also provoke thinking about how gender roles, consumer marketing, and American hopes for the future collided in the kitchens of that era. Bard Graduate Center alums like Sarah, as well as current students, faculty, and curatorial staff, cherish the opportunity to explore big ideas like these through the research, publications, exhibitions, and events that your support makes possible.

As we reflect on all that we cherish this holiday season, we are grateful that you share with us a passion for decorative arts, design history, and material culture. If you cherish Bard Graduate Center’s important role in advancing those fields, please consider making a gift to support our work this season. We welcome your support on Giving Tuesday, December 3, or on any day that’s right for you.  More information about end of year contributions can be found here or by contacting Angela Prevosto at 212.501.3071.
