The Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Book Prize

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of BGC research programs, we are pleased to announce that we are accepting submissions for the 2024 Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Book Prize, awarded annually to the best book on the decorative arts, design history, or material culture of the Americas. The prize rewards scholarly excellence and commitment to cross-disciplinary conversation. The winning author(s) or editor(s) will be chosen by a committee of Bard Graduate Center faculty and will be honored with a research event exploring critical applications of the awarded book’s argument. Past winners include Stitching Love and Loss: A Gee’s Bend Quilt by Lisa Gail Collins (published in 2023), Image Encounters: Moche Murals and Archaeo Art History by Lisa Trever (published in 2022), and Object Lives and Global Histories in Northern North America: Material Culture in Motion, c. 1780–1980 by Beverly Lemire, Laura Peers, and Anne Whitelaw (published in 2021).

Eligible titles include monographs, exhibition catalogues, and collections of essays in any language, published in print or in digital format. Please note that submissions must have a 2024 publication date. The submission must be postmarked by April 4, 2025, and the winner will be announced in September 2025. More information on the submission process and required materials is available on our website.

We encourage you to share the call for submissions with colleagues who have recently published books and publishers who have released books this year that you’re excited about. For questions, please email horowitz.prize@bgc.bard.edu.

Thanks,

Aaron Glass & Andrew Kircher
