Dear Alumni,
In New York, we’ve continued to have excellent luck with fall weather. The semester is well underway, and at my university I’ve begun my teaching responsibilities for the term. I’m a teaching assistant for a lecture course on twentieth-century art, and I’ve enjoyed making use of the discussion section to introduce the students to 1920s and 30s industrial design—a favorite research topic from my undergraduate years that motivated me to apply to BGC. I hope that some of the students will be similarly inspired! (And by the way, if you know any prospective students, please share the below information about fall open houses at BGC!)
As I mentioned in the last newsletter, please save the date for another Autumn Alumni Event, this time at the Museum of Arts & Design (MAD). We’ll enjoy a private tour of alumna Amber Winick’s celebrated exhibition, Designing Motherhood, followed by a champagne reception. The event will take place on the evening of Thursday, November 13—stay tuned for more details!
As always, you can share your latest news through this online form. I look forward to hearing your updates!
All best,
Julia Carabatsos (MA ’22)

The French Academy in Rome has issued a call for papers for its March 2026 symposium “Diplomatic Gifts in the Modern and Contemporary Eras: Definitions, Changes, and Patrimonialisation on a Global Scale.” Considering the long history of diplomatic relations, the conference aims above all to fully analyze the evolving agency of gifts, from the strengthening of princely dynastic alliances to the consolidation of nation states, as well as the way in which the objects offered construct and potentially reconfigure links. Find more information on the application process here. Proposals are due on October 15.
A volume titled History Dis-placed: Expanding the Narrative of Historic House Museums seeks contributions to fill its four thematic sections: Visionary Programming, Beyond These Walls, Virtual Vitality, and Sites of Social Justice. Chapter proposals should examine how historic house museums are navigating decolonial practices, confronting difficult pasts, and opening space for marginalized voices in innovative new ways. Please submit abstracts of 250–500 words and a two-page CV to coeditors Karen Shelby, karen.shelby@baruch.cuny.edu, and Emily Stokes-Rees, ewstokes@syr.edu.
