Fashion, Identity, Society: An Election Day Professional Development Workshop for Educators

Educators! Come to an invigorating day of conversation, object exploration, and making centered around BGC Gallery’s fall exhibition, French Fashion, Women, and the First World War. Enjoy a morning exhibition tour and complimentary lunch with colleagues in our intimate townhouse. During the afternoon, participate in a hands-on workshop that delves into gender, suffrage, and women’s rights. Explore how object-based learning can engage students to think critically, and expand your toolkit through an art-making activity designed to help students build and express personal connections to important issues. Conclude the day with colleagues at our wine reception. Educators of all disciplines and grade levels welcome!

New Perspectives on French Fashion History: Fashion and Labor in Nineteenth Century France

7-9 pm

New Perspectives on French Fashion History highlights new research by emerging fashion scholars. Come to just one session or take all five and learn about the history of fashion display in Parisian department stores and in presentations at World’s Fairs, the transformative impact World War I had on the French fashion industry, cultural shifts brought about by the introduction of ready-made fashion in the 1950s and 60s, and much more. Session Four, Fashion and Labor in Nineteenth Century France, will be taught by Susan Hiner, professor of French and Francophone studies on the John Guy Vassar Chair in Modern Languages at Vassar College.
